Mi familia se exilió de Cuba en 1959, un acontecimiento que nos transformó a todos. Nosotros salimos de Cuba pero Cuba nunca salió de nosotros. Pasé mi adolescencia y mi juventud en México hasta que me mudé a los E.U. en 1981.
Comencé a Fotografíar a principio de los años 70. La primera vez que vi lo que podía hacer una cámara fotográfica supe que Fotografíar era lo que tenía que hacer. Cuando yo comencé no había escuelas de fotografía en la Ciudad de México donde pudiera aprender los aspectos técnicos; así que tuve que aprender siendo aprendiz de fotógrafos. Manuel Álvarez Bravo fue una influencia importante en mi obra.
En 1994 me enfermé de gravedad como resultado de un envenenamiento químico que provenía del proceso de impresión con paladio y el platino. Como resultado de esta condición, me vi forzada a dejar el cuarto oscuro y me llevó al uso de la computadora como un medio para continuar mi trabajo. Actualmente vivo en Nuevo México.
My family left Cuba in 1959 when I was 12 years old, an event that transformed us all. I spent my adolescence and young adult life in Mexico until I moved to the US in 1981.
I began photographing in the early 1970's. The first time I saw what a camera could do I knew that photographing was what I had to do. Then there were no schools of photography in Mexico City available. I had to gain my skills by being apprentice to other photographers. Manuel Alvarez Bravo was an important influence in my work. While apprenticing with him, he gave me an assignment to use only two roles of 2 1/4 film, a total of 24 frames in one month. This exercise changed the way I photograph; each shot had to be carefully selected before executed.
In 1994 I became gravely ill as a result of chemical poisoning stemming from the use of the palladium and platinum printing process. As a result of this condition, I was forced to leave the darkroom and turn to the use of the computer as a means to continue my work. I am now living and working in New Mexico.
